African Science Academy

The doors to the African Science Academy (ASA) opened in August 2016 as Africa’s first specialist STEM-focused academy for girls.

ASA is a girls-only Advanced Level school for young women from across Africa with outstanding maths and science potential. In just one academic year, our students complete globally respected Cambridge International A Levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics. We also provide our students with robotics and computer science programmes alongside their A-Levels to prepare them for careers in Engineering, Science, Computing and more. Means-tested scholarships and bursaries are provided for all students.

Why STEM?

We believe STEM education can unlock Africa’s potential. Yet, many girls are actively discouraged from pursuing science in high school, assuming they complete their secondary education. We actively seek out gifted African women and provide them with a world-class STEM education, training them in the skills of the future and developing into the female leaders of tomorrow.

Why girls?

Girls face huge challenges to developing their full potential; poverty, gender discrimination and lack of access. We provide full scholarships for gifted young women from low-income background to ensure they are given the education opportunities they deserve. We believe women should be at the forefront of Africa’s transformation and, at ASA, we are ensuring they will be.

ASA is a diverse community

African Science Academy is a diverse community of gifted young women from across Africa and a supportive team of staff. All ASA students board at the school and with small class sizes, ASA feels like a family. Our students join us from all over Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and more.

ASA provides a world-class STEM education

We strive to create an environment that fosters critical thinking and curiosity. Students study an intensive course of Maths, Further Maths and Physics. Alongside this, they also become fluent in the use of technology and take courses in computer programming and robotics. We also send the students on trips to universities and to STEM-focused organisations to prepare there for a career in STEM.

ASA develops young female leaders

Our students are trained in leadership and public-speaking skills. Our students also benefit from hearing from a range of high-profile speakers at our weekly guest speaker series. Through our speaker series we aim to inspire our students to become innovative leaders who will go on to transform the continent.  Speakers have included leading academics, entrepreneurs, politicians, authors and executives from around the world.

“ASA is one of the most impressive academies I have ever visited. The outstanding potential of the students and the deep commitment of all the staff to values of excellence, diversity and inclusion mean ASA is well on its journey to realise its ambitious vision to be the leading school in Africa for gifted young women scientists”

“ASA taught me to question, to know where and how to look for solution to problems. I really hope to inspire more young women to study STEM subjects. STEM helps you to think outside the box, to provide real solutions to real problems. With STEM, we can solve Africa's greatest problems like power production, agriculture, sanitation, community planning and many more”.
