ASA encourages critical thinking and curiosity.

At the African Science Academy, the approach to learning encourages critical thinking and curiosity. Students study an intense course of Maths, Further Maths and Physics, alongside computer programming and robotics - all in one academic year.

Our students also hear from and have access to a range of high-profile speakers at our weekly guest speaker series. Through our speaker series we aim to inspire our students to become innovative leaders who will go on to transform the continent. Speakers have included leading academics, entrepreneurs, politicians, authors and executives from around the world.

They are also offered courses in Computer programming and robotics to expand their STEM skills. Students are supported with university applications and go on to study Engineering, Computer Science, Maths and Science courses at universities within Africa and abroad.

Extra-curricular activities

We provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities, with a strong focus on creative problem solving and excellent communication skills. Activities include: programming, sports, entrepreneur club, debating and chess. Students also are encouraged to set up their own clubs and societies within the school.

Preparing our Future Leaders to Lead

In 2018 we partnered with Eduspots to provide our students at ASA the opportunity to grow their leadership skills and become active change-makers through community-led projects. Through this partnership our students have been able to apply for funding through the academy, and depending on the success of their application be given grants to start projects in their home community.

We have seen through this initiative that selected students have improved in their leadership,, teamwork, goal orientation, well-being, and citizenship values. One of the most noteworthy success stories has been with our alumna Claris Nadini, a 2018 ASA alumna and graduate of Ashesi University.

In 2018, Claris founded the Badili Zone, after receiving the Changemarkers Fund from EduSpots. The fund provided her with the resources to launch her organisation's first accessible and equipped community library in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, Nairobi, Kenya. This birthed the beginning of the Badili Zone, an organisation that aims to eradicate the lack of access to high-quality education and that aims to empower young people in slums.

Following the success of her launch, Claris has progressed to become a Girls’ Bill of Rights Ambassador and has also been selected to join the Melton Fellowship. Furthermore, she has been selected by the We Are Foundation for the Youth To Front Fund and has received the Isuzu East Africa Women Council Award for Impacting Society.

Claris through the help of EduSpots has been able to channel and develop her leadership skills by becoming an active change advocate in her community.

Since partnering with EduSpots in 2018, we have had 9 ASA students in total create and start community led projects in their home communities; Savelugu, New Atuabo, Yamfo, Bimbilla, Dulugu, Freetown, Lusaka and Nairobi.

“Studying at ASA not only defined my career trajectory but also played a big role in ensuring that I was ready for that journey. The intense and holistic developmental experience at the school allowed me to explore opportunities as an aspiring engineer and problem solver. Whilst studying at ASA, I had an opportunity to apply for a grant to initiate a community change project under EduSpots. As fate would have it, I applied and I was one of the three students who won the grant to execute the projects we had applied for, a grant that enabled Badili Zone to officially launch its first community library.” - Claris Nadini, Class of 2018
